Let’s start by having you introduce yourself.
My name is David Ambarzumjan and I’m an oil painter. I’m currently working on a series called ‘Brushstrokes in Time‘ and it’s all about showing the same place or landscape in two different times. I’m basically time-traveling using paint.
Current city: Munich, Germany
What is your creative process like?
First, I paint the scenery—it can take weeks, sometimes months to finish. After that, I paint over the scenery with a huge brush stroke spanning across the canvas. The brush stroke acts like a portal to the same place at another time: past, present or future.
Where do you draw your inspiration from?
I just want to express how beautiful and diverse our planet is but also how fast and intensely it can change over time—sometimes through the force of nature or our human impact.
What do people typically say about your work?
The reactions are very diverse. When they watch me paint over the seemingly finished artwork, they are shocked and disturbed, and many don’t shy away from sharing their anger in the comments about me “destroying” my painting. (Which is quite entertaining.) But after they see the final painting and realize that there is more to it, the comments are very positive and it’s very overwhelming to witness.
What is the best advice you’ve gotten as an artist or the most important thing you’ve learned?
To be patient and believe in the process! It’s always difficult for me to get through the first few layers of a new painting because I often feel like it’s not going to turn out well. I have to remind myself every time to be patient and build layer after layer until I get to a point where I feel comfortable with the results. That doesn’t always happen, but that’s fine because there is so much to learn from the process, even if you don’t have a finished artwork to show for it.
