Simply stated, Now On View celebrates and showcases the artists of Society6 and their work. Get to know them—and then get lost in their gallery.
Let’s start by introducing yourself…
I’m Terry Runyan and have been creating illustration and art for most of my life. Recently I started calling myself creative encourager because I love to share with other artist about the creative process. I worked as an in-house illustrator for 30 years, retiring in 2016. Since then I’ve been building my art business that includes freelance, licensing, teaching and sharing on YouTube. I have a bit of an obsession with felines and share my home with siblings Rylee and Tucker. I love focusing on animals and people in my work and often combine them. An example of this is my weekly #catonheadwednesday (cat on head Wednesday) posts.
Current city: Leawood, Kansas (a suburb of Kansas City)
What’s your process?
I work with all types of medium from digital to painting, collaging and drawing. Mostly I love to create with mixed media. Most of the my work on Society6 was created digitally using my iPad pro and the Procreate App.
Sometimes I start with a concept or a prompt but I also enjoy jumping in and seeing where the art takes me. I don’t do much planning or drawing, besides quick thumbnails, prior to starting a piece. I often look through images on Pinterest to spark ideas but quickly leave those behind as the work develops.
Where do you draw your inspiration from?
I’m inspired by everything I see! Of course my cats are a constant source of inspiration, nature, animals in general and I love fashion illustration.
What do people typically say about your work?
Cute, fun, lighthearted, retro, simple, funny, amusing, uplifting and whimsical. Sometimes just plain silly!
What is the best advice you’ve gotten as an artist or the most important thing you’ve learned?
To create daily even if it is for 5 minutes. Any creating will do even if it is a scribble on paper. Moving with art daily has had the most impact on my art. Showing up, even when I don’t feel like it, invites creativity to meet you.
