The December artist playlist is here! Each month we’re asking one music-loving artist to create a custom playlist of their favorite songs. This month, Charlie Orellana aka Æphicles, put together a groovy and retro-feeling playlist that will keep you going right through the new year. Take a listen and check out our chat below!

Introduce yourself and your work!

Hi, my name is Charlie Orellana from Guatemala, Central America. I’m a digital collage artist & freelance photographer/videographer. I started my digital art project Aephicles with the intention to represent into visuals all the messages that come from the derivatives of the subconscious mind once we access them through meditation, dreams, connection to nature & living life rich in vibrant colors and culture. Making art is my way to connect my thoughts and imagination and manifest them into the “real world.”

Could you tell us about the playlist you put together?

This playlist reflects my evolution as an artist through the auditive perspective. As humans we are in constant evolution and experimentation so I have selected some of my favorite songs who have influenced me throughout my journey. I do have a tendency for alternative rock, garage and psychedelic vibes but I also enjoy the smooth, dancy and melodic electronic sounds. I’ve curated this playlist leaning more towards the groovy and retro feeling sounds that I love and I project in some of my artworks. I’m a huge fan of vintage aesthetics and lo-fi sounds!

What song or artist do you have on repeat recently?

Lately I will give my first place to the prolific Australian band King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard because they innovate themselves with every new release and sound they come up with. The song that I’ve had most on repeat is Sacred Sands from the band Allah-Las. It just transports me into the western golden era of films, which is very important and has a lot of influence on my style.

If your art were a music genre, what would it be?

Psychedelic grooves

How do you describe your musical taste?

Very cinematic, melodic, experimental and groovy.

What part does music play in your creative process?

It really defines the look, aesthetic and feeling I try to give to my artworks. I can bring back to life that look that I always loved and music just makes things flow more easily and enjoyable.
