The August artist playlist is here! Each month we’re asking one music-loving artist to create a custom playlist of their favorite songs. This month, we’re jamming out with the help of Texas based artist Nick Quintero. He’s put together a playlist that’s chill, gritty and sure to help you hustle through your day. Take a listen and check out our chat below!

Introduce yourself and your work!

I’m Nick Quintero, a Texas based artist, illustrator & designer. I like to draw things inspired by where I live & the music I love. I also love coffee & whiskey – sometimes together.

Could you tell us about the playlist you put together?

My playlist is a mix of chill vibes and songs that I can sing along to while I put the finishing touches on a project. My work vibes range from hard beats to super chill lyrics that just really help me get lost in what I’m creating. I don’t make one type of art so why would I listen to one type of music?

What song or artist do you have on repeat recently?

Houston Texas’ Khruangbin. Their wavy psych-rock just really keeps in the zone.

If your art were a music genre, what would it be?

Probably psych hip-hop with big beats made with lo-fi folky instruments. That seems to make some sense to me.

How do you describe your musical taste?

Very specific. There are so many bands or genres where I like literally one song. I like a lot of hip-hop but it ranges from super nerdy underground to hardcore to 90s, etc. I like music that feels like it was created with a lot of dedication and hard work.

What part does music play in your creative process?

I listen to music any time I am working on anything! I am always getting weird looks when I work with my headphones on because I can’t help but groove along to whatever I have on at the time. My headphones die 2-3 times a day because I can’t give them a rest. Passion fueled music helps me make passion fueled art every time.
