Simply stated, Now On View celebrates and showcases the artists of Society6 and their work. Get to know them—and then get lost in their gallery.
Who are you and what do you do? I’m Lois van Baarle, otherwise known as Loish online. I’m a digital artist and divide my time between client work—mostly doing character design and concept art for games and animation—and making artwork for my own enjoyment.
Current city: Utrecht (The Netherlands)
Clients: Coca-Cola, LEGO, EA Games, Amazon Web Systems, Guerrilla Games (Horizon Zero Dawn)
How did you make these? I make almost everything digitally, so either on my Wacom 27QHD in my workspace or on my iPad Pro while traveling or lounging on the couch. Sometimes I draw on paper, which feels weird because there’s no undo button, so my traditional art experience is limited to pencil sketches—and sometimes ink, if I’m feeling brave!
Why did you make these? I’ve always loved drawing, ever since I was a little kid. It’s been a part of my life for as long as I can remember. So making artwork for myself, and not for clients, is a fundamental part of my life—especially now that I draw for a living and there’s a risk of losing touch with the passion that I had as a kid. It’s so important to stay in touch with what I love about drawing and art, without too many restrictions or rules. So I make these kinds of drawings mainly as a way to stay connected to my own creativity and continue to develop my own artistic identity and style.
What do people typically say about your work? That the colors stand out to them. One of the reasons I like working digitally is because it allows you to apply colors intuitively; there’s limitless options and you can tweak the colors as you go, which allows me to wing it and just ‘feel’ which colors work well together. Because of this intuitive approach, my color choices are based in my emotion, the feeling I have at that moment in time. I don’t base my color choices on reality, or on the rules of color theory. This is one of the main things people notice and remember about my drawings, the colors stand out a lot.
