Who are you and what do you do? Hey, I’m Mia Novakova! I’m a graphic design and photography student. I strive to create images that have a moody and mysterious feel to them. I’m really drawn to the way the world looks at night, especially buildings. Although my work barely has any people in it, I sometimes enjoy shooting portraits that don’t completely give away the face of the subject. Other passions that I have are video games and science fiction.
Current city: Plovdiv, Bulgaria
How did you make these? For my work, I use both a digital and a film camera. I love to play with double exposure and combine multiple images together (analog and digital), and I try to experiment as much as possible both with shooting and editing. When it comes to the final image, I want it to have a cinematic look.
Why did you make these? It all started out back in high school when I used to take photos only with my phone camera. I didn’t even have that big of a passion for photography back then, I used to draw and paint. I’ve always been attracted to moody cityscapes and landscapes and I’ve tried to draw similar things in the past, but it just never turned out the way I wanted it to. After I got my first camera I realized that photography gave me a lot more freedom and fulfillment. Now it has become such a big part of my life and most importantly, it has become my therapy.
What do people typically say about your work? That they like the vibe and atmosphere of it, or that it reminds them of a dream they’ve had. It makes me especially happy when people tell me that my work has inspired them to take their own camera and go out and shoot. It’s definitely one of the most rewarding feelings.
