Simply stated, Now On View celebrates and showcases the artists of Society6 and their work. Get to know them—and then get lost in their gallery.
As a way of introducing yourself, who are you and what do you do?
Hey there! My name is Justin Shiels. By day, I’m a creative director at a digital marketing ad agency. My passion project is sharing inspirational messages to the world through my weekly email newsletter Curious Tribe. I also create digital illustrations that focus on empathy, identity, and self love.
Current city: Austin, TX is where I currently reside but New Orleans will always be home.
How did you make these?
I draw rough sketches by hand and then refine them on my iPad Pro in Procreate. Making digital art increased my productivity exponentially.
Where do you draw your inspiration from?
I’m inspired by many contemporary artists of color including graphic designer Emory Douglas, visual artist Mickalene Thomas, and creative genius Jean-Michel Basquiat.
What is the best advice you’ve gotten as an artist or the most important thing you’ve learned?
Don’t get too hung up with being perfect. Make a first draft as rapidly as possible. Then make revisions until you think it’s a solid 80%. Then publish. It’s better to get it out the door than to take forever refining and not let people actually see the work.
