Could you introduce yourself?
Hi! My name is Sara Gironi Carnevale and I’m an illustrator from Naples, Italy. I specialize in editorial illustration—mostly working for magazines and newspapers. I just can’t keep my mouth shut and I deeply believe that, as an artist, part of my job is to contribute to the society we live in; so politics, social injustice and topical issues are things I like to sink my teeth into.

What’s your process?
I usually work digitally but I still use paper and pencil to realize my sketches. I recently started using Procreate and I find it very useful, especially when I’m traveling. However, what really matters in editorial illustration is the idea behind the illustration and, usually, finding that idea is the most challenging but exciting part of the process.

Why did you create?
I guess it’s because I wouldn’t be able to do anything else in my life. Since I was child, I’ve always drawn and I’m sure I’d still draw even if I had a different job. I’m feeling quite blessed for doing something that I really love and even if, at times, it’s frustrating or difficult, I’d never change it for anything else. “Choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life,” right?

What do people typically say about your work?
People who know me personally know that there’s a lot of myself in my illustrations. Usually they appreciate my bold colors and the sharp subjects but, above all, they appreciate the way I translate different and challenging topics through visive metaphors. It’s difficult to do, and I struggle with it, but to be surrounded by people that believe in you is a really good starting point.
