Introduce yourself and your work!
I’m Karan Singh, an Art Director from Toronto/New Delhi. I started my Society6 shop under the artist moniker ‘AyeYoKP’ to sort of get away from all the commercial client projects I worked on at various design studios. It started as a space where I could put all my personal ideas, concepts and artworks together and share it with the world at the same time.
My artworks and typography are almost always created with bold themes in vibrant and sharp contrasting colors. I’m also inspired by different European mid-century art movements, especially Matisse’s cutouts and fauvist style. I try to create my art in freestyle and I often combine two completely different styles to create this bright fun aesthetic that has become my signature lately.
Could you tell us about the playlist you put together?
The playlist is a mix of Chill Hip-Hop/Rap with a bit of Bass, Ambient, Afro, Trap and Lo-Fi sprinkled around. Perfect for long drives and late night walks or when you want to zone in, focus and get things done.
What song or artist do you have on repeat recently?
J. Cole’s ‘The Fall Off’ has been on a heavy rotation recently. Been a fan since his early mixtape days and his newest release is one of his best so far.
If your art were a music genre, what would it be?
It would be a mix of so many different genres and flavors. Some of my art has a bit of Jazz to it, and then some of it has Rap in it.
How do you describe your musical taste?
I am very inquisitive when it comes to music. I’m always happy to listen to all kinds of genres but I have grown up to mostly Hip-Hop & Rap so that’ll always be my go-to. Whether it’s the colorful storytelling, the rebellious nature or the general spirit and way of life – Hip-Hop has always inspired me and my body of work in a variety of different ways.
What part does music play in your creative process?
Music has always played a key role in my creative processes. Growing up, I was obsessed with collecting album covers and that later translated into my interest in visual and graphic arts. But music was the start of it. To this day, music serves as both of a physical and conceptual background to anything I create. I don’t think I have ever made an artwork without any music playing in the background.
