Who are you and what do you do? My name is Nina and I am a freelance illustrator, so drawing whimsical animals is actually my full-time occupation. I love drawing and painting different animals, especially woodland critters. I use traditional media like watercolors and gouache. Besides doing a lot of client work, I am also a proud Society6 shop owner and Etsy shop owner. My passion is also making repeat patterns with my artwork, which I do digitally. I also love to make products with my artwork, like enamel pins, notebooks, coloring books, notepads, greeting cards, etc.
Current city: I live in Ljubljana, Slovenia.
Clients: Papyrus, Little Blue Nest, Craft Consortium, Lilipinso, Lake Coloring, Charuca, Collectif Un Pour Tous
How did you make these? Most of my work is drawn by hand the old-school way, and painted patiently with watercolors and gouache. First layers are quite relaxed, but at the end I somehow find the patience to make all the tiny details and make my characters come to life. I do all the repeat patterns digitally in Photoshop or Illustrator.
Why did you make these? I love creating animal characters. In my body of work, they are mostly coming from a woodland environment—that is because I draw things that are close to me and I can see in person if I am lucky. [The] world around me inspires me very much. While I work, I love to stylize them, make them more simple and less realistic. But then I want to add so many details that they appear alive again. Like they actually exist somewhere in the world. Oh, what a happy place that would be.
What do people typically say about your work? That it is very cute, whimsical, charming, delicate and soft.
